Guru Purnima in India has always been very special for the guru-shishya parampara or the unique relationship between teachers and their students. Guru Purnima this year is July 5th. He is also knowned as Vyasa Purnima after Veda Vyasa, who wrote the epic Mahabharata. On Guru Purnima, students pay tribute and remember their teachers.
It’s a full moon day in the month of Ashadh, the third month of the Hindu calendar. Guru Purnima also marks the beginning of Chaturmas or the four auspicious months dotted with festivals across the country.

Ramakant Achrekar and Sachin Tendulkar: This guru-shishya the duo need not be presented. Sachin Tendulkar, at each Guru Purnima, pays tribute to his coach Ramakant Achrekar. “Achrekar sir taught us the virtues of the right game and the right life. Thank you for being part of your life and for enriching us with your coaching manual. Well done sir and that you train more wherever you are” Tendulkar said after his guru died.
Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Swami Vivekananda: He said that under the leadership of Ramakrishna, Vivekananda found his purpose in life and introduced Hinduism, culture and Indian ethos to the world. “I am proud to belong to a religion that has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We not only believe in universal tolerance, but we accept all religions as true,” said Swami Vivekananda in his famous speech at the World Parliament of Religion in Chicago in 1893.
Chanakya and Chandragupta Maurya: Under the direction of Chanakya – philosopher, jurist and royal adviser – Chandragupta Maurya has become both a great warrior and an amiable sovereign. His kingdom included almost half of the Indian subcontinent. Chanakya’s words of wisdom are often quoted even today.
Dronacharya and Arjuna: Since the time of Mahabharata, Dronacharya and Arjun have been cited as one of the greatest Guru-Shishya duo. Dronacharya’s teaching on archery in Arjuna led to the victory of the Pandavas in Mahabharata.
