Ten people, including a few women, were arrested for allegedly operating a bogus call center in Nalasopara in Palghar district, Maharashtra, and extorting money from US citizens posing as officials, the police said Thursday.
Officials from the Mira Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar (MBVV) police station raided the bogus call center on Tuesday evening, he said.
The callers will pose as officials of the US Department of Social Security and tell US citizens that they have committed serious crimes and if they do not pay money they risk prosecution and end up in jail. one official said.
“The defendants used to steal Social Security numbers (SSNs), cell phone numbers and other confidential information from American citizens. They used to make Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls to victims from their bogus call center, ”MBVV police spokesman Tukaram Tatkar said.
“They used to tell US citizens that they could face prosecution for the serious offenses they committed. Callers also said they could face consequences such as losing their job. , cancellation of their driver’s license, foreclosure of real estate or the inclusion of their social security on the blacklist. cards, ”he said.
Callers would also tell victims that charge sheets will be laid against them and that they could end up in jail for their crimes. They were threatening and extracting money from the victims under the promise that no action would be taken against them, he added.
“Based on information, a police team raided the Yashwant Gaurav building on Tuesday night and broke the racketeering. Ten people were arrested,” Tatkar said.
The accused have been identified as Prakash Banerjee (34), Jayesh Padaya (24), Chandan Amin (24), Bharat Bhati (30) Omkar Kale (20), Sainath Kapade (20), Komal Bagade (19), Muskan Hussain (19)), Pranjal Shinde (28) and Chandresh Vishram (24), police said.
A case was registered against them under IPC Articles 420 (cheating), 419 (cheating per person), 384 (extortion), 379 (theft), 405 (criminal breach of trust), 120B (criminal conspiracy) , sections of the Indian Telegraph Law and Computer Law at Nalasopara Police Station on Wednesday, he said.
