Amid tensions on the Assam-Mizoram border, a primary school building near the interstate border in Cachar district was destroyed in an explosion perpetrated by unknown people early on Saturday, police said.

A 12-hour bandh called by a student organization to protest the kidnapping and murder of an Assam resident allegedly by attackers from Mizoram has also affected normal life in Cachar district.

The sound of the explosion in the school building located in a remote forest area of ​​Sadirkhal in the Dholai region was heard from afar, police said.

No casualties were reported in the explosion.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, police said.

This is the second explosion in a school building in the Cachar district in two weeks. On October 22, a bombing took place at a Bengali middle school in Khulicherra, district, near the interstate border.

On October 29, senior police official GP Singh visited the district border area to examine the law and order situation and said the explosion in the school was possibly be the work of
some people to terrorize the local population.

Tension has reigned along the Assam-Mizoram border since October 17, after some people damaged 18 temporary huts and three housing units, following which several rounds of talks have taken place between senior Assam officials, of Mizoram and the central government.

On November 4, the Chief Secretary of Assam, Jishnu Baruah, and the Director General of Police, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, visited the border and reviewed the public order situation.

Baruah said the state government was “absolutely clear” on Assam’s constitutional boundary, and said certain elements play a major role in stoking the fire of disputes and disputes.

The Mizoram shares a 164.6 km border with Assam.

Meanwhile, normal life has been affected in Cachar district by a 12-hour Barak Bandh called by the All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Student Association.

The Barak Valley in southern Assam includes three districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi.

The bandh was called in to protest the kidnapping and murder of Intazul Laskar, a resident of Lailapur near the border, apparently by residents of Mizoram on Monday.

Markets, shops, private offices and financial institutions were closed, while vehicles were kept off the road during the bandh, officials said.

Mizoram was previously part of Assam until 1972 when it was transformed into Union territory. It became the 23rd state of India on February 20, 1987.
