Famous Egyptian actor Ragaa al-Geddawy died on Sunday after contracting COVID-19, said the union. She was 81 years old. “Ragaa al-Geddawy died this morning due to COVID-19,” union leader Ashraf Zaki told AFP, adding, “No public burial has been held for health reasons.” Ragaa al-Geddawy tested positive for the new coronavirus disease in late May and was treated in isolation at a hospital in Ismailia province, about 130 kilometers (80 miles) east of Cairo, reported local media. She recently finished filming her latest TV series Laabet El Nesyan (Oblivion Game), which aired during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

A seasoned actress, Ragaa al-Geddawy has had a long and varied career during which she has gained fame throughout the Arab world.

Ragaa al-Geddawy started as a model before playing actor roles in the late 1950s, including his first film Ghariba (The Stranger) in 1958. She then starred in over 380 films, plays and television shows alongside some of the biggest names in Egyptian cinema.

Ragaa al-Geddawy was also the niece of the famous belly dancer and actor, Taheya Carioca.

The Egyptian Ministry of Health has recorded 74,035 cases of COVID-19, including 3,280 deaths since the registration of its first infections.
