Diwali – the festival of lights – is celebrated by millions of people around the world. This year, however, the party was disrupted by the novel coronavirus pandemic, which has affected more than 12.8 million people across the world. The United States has recorded the highest number of cases – more than a crore in the country, which just picked Joe Biden as the next president, contracted the virus. India, the second most affected country, has recorded more than 86 lakh cases.
While Diwali celebrations will be muted this year, they will certainly bring joy amid the pandemic. Thousands of miles from home, party-goers of Indian descent in New York City can brighten up their weekends and eat, pray and attend virtual events, even if they are staying at home.
Join the Diwali celebrations in New York’s Times Square: The festival would be celebrated over the next three days, practically in Times Square. The Indian Consulate General in New York shared details of the events on its official Facebook page. Lighting diyas, a local talent show and international performances – a lot to look forward to.

A spiritual celebration: The Bhakti Center, a New York-based nonprofit, will host its third annual Diwali event on Saturday. Details of the event are available on his Facebook page. “But we are delighted to announce that we will continue the Diwali celebrations and bring it to your living room this year!” the nonprofit said on social media.
While you celebrate Diwali at home, try out easy recipes and put on your chef’s hat. With many videos available on the internet, you can try baking cakes with staples like eggs, chocolate, milk, oil, chocolate, and bananas.
In a blog, the New York Public Library shared a list of books to read over Diwali weekend.
If you are going out for shopping, remember to wear the mask, avoid crowded places, and use disinfectant often as the coronavirus is still not gone.
