New York:

The number of deaths from the coronavirus pandemic in the United States could exceed 150,000, President Donald Trump said on Monday.

“It could reach 150,” Trump said in an interview with cable TV channel Spectrum News. “It could go beyond.” But we would have lost two to four million lives (without mitigation), “he said.

A study published by Imperial College London in mid-March warned of a possible 2.2 million deaths in the United States if no effort had been made to limit the spread of the highly contagious virus.

The number of deaths in the United States from COVID-19 has exceeded 120,000, according to a tracker maintained by Johns Hopkins University.

“We have done a good job and now we are bringing the country back,” said Trump.

The president was also questioned about holding other electoral rallies at a time when the virus was still spreading in several states in the south and west.

“We are still worried about safety,” he said. “We want to get rid of this thing.”

Trump, who faces a tough re-election battle in November, is expected to attend a “Students for Trump” event in Phoenix on Tuesday.

He held a campaign rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Saturday, his first since the start of the pandemic, but was uncrowded.
