New Delhi:
Congress said on Thursday it was disappointed with its performance in the Bihar assembly elections and that the party’s working committee would soon consider it.
Congress managed to win just 19 of the 70 seats it contested, down from its previous tally of 27 out of 41 seats it fought in the 2015 assembly elections in the state .
The people of Bihar have come “close enough” to change the government, Congress spokesman P Chidambaram told reporters.
Asked about the party’s performance in Assembly polls, he said: “We accept the verdict. We are disappointed with our performance in Bihar. The Congressional Working Committee (CWC) will review it in due course and draft it. an official statement of our position. “
The former finance minister said it should not be forgotten that Bihar is the poorest state in India, even though Narendra Modi has been prime minister since 2014 and Nitish Kumar the chief minister of the state since 2005.
“In the poorest state of India, as I agree in the alternative analysis, they voted for no change of government. Well, they almost changed government. I think 10 seats of that way or that would have changed the government., “he said.
The difference in the vote between the NDA and the “Mahagathbandhan” was only 0.3%, Mr. Chidambaram said.
Chief Congressman Jairam Ramesh said the Bihar tenure was not in favor of the chief minister.
The difference in the voting percentage was very small and Congress should have done better, he said, adding that performance would be analyzed and reviewed at the TCC meeting.
“But to say that the result nullified the issues raised by the Mahagathbandhan or that these did not resonate in Bihar, I do not agree with that. The issues that we raised are there and they would stay, ”Ramesh said.
