Filmmaker Nishikant Kamat is on life support at Hyderabad hospital where he was taken last month, ANI news agency reports. Mr Kamat “is currently on life support and continues to be in critical condition,” AIG hospitals said, according to ANI. Mr. Kamat, 50, is said to be suffering from chronic liver disease. Last week, a medical bulletin said he was “critical but stable”. This morning, a news outlet incorrectly reported the death of Nishikant Kamat, prompting a flood of condolence messages which were later deleted once the case was cleared up. Actor Riteish Deshmukh, who starred in Mr. Kamat’s 2014 film Lai Bhaari, tweeted that the director was “still alive and fighting”; he also asked the media that had reported his death to publish clarifications.

Actor John Abraham, star of two of Mr. Kamat’s films, tweeted: “Nishikant is alive. In contact with his doctor. He’s a fighter. Please pray for him.”

On July 31, Nishikant Kamat was taken to AIG Hospital in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, suffering from jaundice and abdominal distension, ANI news agency reported. Mr Kamat is “critical but stable,” a hospital medical bulletin said last week. The hospital statement read: “He has been diagnosed with chronic liver disease and other secondary infections. He is in the intensive care unit for ongoing follow-up under the supervision of a multidisciplinary team of senior consultants including gastroenterologists, hepatologists, intensive care and others. His condition is critical but stable. “

Nishikant Kamat is best known for directing the Hindi remake of the hit Malayalam Drishyam – the remake starred Ajay Devgn and Tabu. He also has directed Irrfan Khan in Madaari and Bombay Meri Jaan, and John Abraham in Force and Rocky handsome. Mr. Kamat, also an actor, played roles in Rocky handsome and some other films like those of 2018 Bhavesh Joshi.

Nishikant Kamat is also prominent in the Marathi film industry. He has directed films like Fast Dombivali, which was his directorial debut, Lai Bhaari and Fugay; he also acted in Fugay, Hava Aney Dey and Saatchya Aat Gharat. Fast Dombivali won the national award for best Marathi film. Mr. Kamat was the creative producer of last year’s web series The last call.
