Digital India may have become a prime target for criminals, with the country recording a dramatic 63.5% increase in cybercrime incidents in 2019, according to data from the National Crime Record Bureau.
NCRB data indicates that 44,546 cybercrime cases were recorded in 2019, up from 28,248 in 2018.
The data showed that in 60.4% of cases, registered fraud was the reason followed by sexual exploitation (5.1%) and caused discredit (4.2%).
The highest number of cybercrime cases was recorded in Karnataka (12,020), followed by Uttar Pradesh (11,416), Maharashtra (4,967), Telangana (2,691) and Assam (2,231 ). Among the Union’s territories, Delhi alone accounted for 78% of cybercrimes.
According to the data, in metropolitan cities, a total of 18,372 cases were recorded, an increase of 81.9%. The data also indicates that the maximum number of cases (13,814) has been recorded for computer offenses (Article 66 of the Information Technology Act).
“The more the digitization, the more frauds will be highlighted, which is why the numbers have increased so much,” says a senior officer.
