Mumbai:

A swarm of locusts entered eastern Maharashtra where district and agriculture staff have started spraying chemicals on crops and vegetation to save them from migratory pests, officials said on Monday. .

Primary reports said that in the past two days, four to five villages in the Vidarbha region have been attacked by locusts, known to feast on all kinds of plants and growing crops.

Deputy Director of Agriculture Ravindra Bhosale told the PTI news agency: “The locust swarm entered the state from the Amravati district. It then went to Wardha and is now at Nagpurs Katol tehsil. “

A team from the regional center of the Central Integrated Pest Management Center has started spraying chemicals on crops and plants near the Jalalkheda bypass where the insects have been located, he said.

“The central agencies in this area alerted us to the locust attack and the necessary information was also passed on to the villagers,” said Mr. Bhosale.

“A swarm does not travel overnight. Migratory pests move during the day and fly in the direction of the wind,” said the officer.

“Locusts are very dangerous for all types of vegetation. They feed on green leaves and are known to devour crops spread over hectares of land,” he said.

I personally monitor the spraying of chemicals as we would using approximately 1,200 liters of water with insecticides, said the official.

Earlier, locust attacks were reported in neighboring Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), a United Nations agency, the Desert Locust is considered the most dangerous of all migratory pests in the world.

It threatens people’s livelihoods, food security, the environment and economic development, said FAO.
