Washington:

The Democratic Party will end the freeze on green cards and take action to end its backlog, if it is voted into power in the November presidential elections, the party’s proposed 2020 platform said.

The Green Card, officially known as the Permanent Resident Card, is a document issued to immigrants to the United States as proof that they have granted the privilege of living in the country permanently.

The proposed platform, among others, has expressed its opposition to President Donald Trump’s decision to temporarily suspend the issuance of H-1B visas.

The H-1B visa is a nonimmigrant visa that allows U.S. businesses to employ foreign workers in skilled occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise. Tech companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees every year in countries like India and China.

The 2020 Democratic Party platform, which is similar to an election manifesto in India, would be adopted by party delegates at its national convention in Wisconsin. The four-day convention August 17-20 would formally name former Vice President Joe Biden as its candidate for the November 3 presidential election.

“We support the granting of visas for permanent immigration based on employment in a way that meets the needs of the labor market. We want to attract and retain talent in this country, which is why the Democrats will end the freeze green cards by the Trump administration for new immigrants, and instead pursue a meaningful reform agenda, ”the proposed platform said.

At 90 pages, the platform was reviewed by the 2020 Platform Committee at its meeting on July 27.

A 21st century immigration system that honors American values is an essential prerequisite not only for recovering from the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, but for strengthening its democracy and ensuring America’s long-term economic competitiveness. , did he declare.

“This is why Democrats believe in improving and increasing opportunities for legal and permanent immigration. Our family, humanitarian and diversity pathways have contributed immeasurably to the vitality and productivity of American society and should continue. to be the centerpiece of our immigration system, ”the platform said.

“Democrats oppose President Trump’s chaotic and reckless illegal changes to the legal immigration system, including decisions to reduce family immigration as well as H-1B and other visa programs that can help our economy.” , did he declare.

According to the platform, a Biden administration will remove unfair barriers to naturalization, reduce backlogs and make U.S. immigration processes faster, more efficient and less expensive.

“These reforms will strengthen our communities, our families, our economy and our country,” he said.

According to the platform, Democrats believe family unity should be a guiding principle of its immigration policy. As such, it will prioritize family reunification for children still separated from their families and reinstate family reunification programs terminated by the Trump administration, he said.

“We support legislation to treat the spouses and children of green card holders as immediate parents and end their unjust separation. We will eliminate family green card arrears and reform the system to speed up family visas,” he said. declared the platform.

“And we will work with Congress to remove barriers to immigration, such as the three and 10 year bans, and remove the 10 year waiting period for permanent bar waivers that separate loved ones,” he said. he declared.

Claiming that Democrats will cancel President Donald Trump’s “emergency”, the platform said.

He said they will immediately end “discriminatory travel and immigration bans that disproportionately impact” Muslims, Arabs and Africans, and invite those whose visas have been refused under these “xenophobic policies and anti-American to run the United States again “.

“We will support the legislation to ensure that no president can ever pass discriminatory bans again,” he said.
