Coronavirus cases in India crossed 2.66 lakh cases today, after a record number of 9,987 cases were reported in 24 hours, although the government authorized a number of relaxations as of Monday after more than two months of foreclosure. It was the largest jump in a single day of cases, with the country recording more than 9,000 cases for the seventh consecutive day. The country is approaching 10,000 cases a day.

The total number of deaths from the virus now stands at 7,466, according to government data. The total number of cases is 2.66.598, of which 1.29.215 have recovered. 266 people have died in the past 24 hours due to the fatal disease.

Maharashtra remains the most affected state in the country – the state has even exceeded the count of China with more than 88,000 cases. The state also has the highest number of deaths with 3,169 deaths and its capital, Mumbai, is one of the most affected cities in the country.

Tamil Nadu and Delhi, which also record a constant spike in cases, are the second and third most affected countries in India. Tamil Nadu has 33,229 cases while Delhi has nearly 30,000.

Delhi has seen a decrease in the number of tests performed daily as only 3,700 samples were tested on Monday. Of this total, 1,007 tested positive for the virus, which represents a positive rate of 27.2%. On Monday, the positive rate across the country was 9.2%.

The total number of samples tested so far is 49,16,116. In the past 24 hours, 1,418,682 samples have been tested.

Of the 266 new deaths reported until Tuesday morning, 109 were in Maharashtra, 62 in Delhi, 31 in Gujarat, 17 in Tamil Nadu, 11 in Haryana, nine in West Bengal, eight in Uttar Pradesh, six in Rajasthan, four in Jammu and Kashmir, three in Karnataka, two in Madhya Pradesh and Punjab and one in Bihar and Kerala.

India’s recovery rate – the number of patients who have successfully battled the disease – is currently 48.46%.

In the past few days, India has seen an increase in the number of cases, even from today places of worship, malls and restaurants have reopened under “Unlock 1” – the first of the plan in three phases for the reopening of prohibited activities in non-containment zones with strict rules.

India is the fifth country most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic after the United States, Brazil, Russia and the United Kingdom. The country overtook Spain a few days ago.
