Itanagar:

A team of doctors from a public hospital in Arunachal Pradesh carried out a successful cesarean section on Tuesday on a pregnant woman infected with coronavirus, a senior official said.

The woman gave birth to a boy at around 7:20 p.m. at the Tomo Riba Institute for Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), the hospital’s deputy chief medical superintendent, Dr Taw Kaki, said.

She is the first woman infected with coronavirus to give birth to a baby in the northeastern state.

“The mother and baby are fine. They are now together. Since she is a COVID-19 patient, we will have to decide whether or not the newborn will stay with the mother,” Kaki said.

The woman, who was initially admitted to the Rama Krishna Mission Hospital, was referred to TRIHMS on Tuesday after testing positive for COVID-19.

“The woman will be treated like other Covid-19 patients and will be kept in hospital until she recovers from the infection,” said TRIHMS director Dr Moji Jini.

“She is terminally pregnant. The medical team have decided to perform a cesarean section according to standard operating procedure. This is her third pregnancy,” Kaki said.

TRIHMS is the only medical school in the state. The authorities at the RKM hospital suspended all services until July 23 after the detection of the positive COVID case.

Hospital secretary Swami Vishweshananda said OPD, emergency department, labor room and operating theater will remain closed for three days for disinfection and screening of health personnel for research. contacts.

Jini said coronavirus cases are on the rise in the state but the morbidity rate is quite low with only three deaths, which is a good sign and most cases are asymptomatic.

Of the 790 total COVID-19 cases in the state, 502 are now active.

Jini said the government and health authorities are doing their best to trace primary and secondary contacts of people with HIV to contain the spread of the virus.

He said that although TRIHMS was converted to a dedicated COVID hospital earlier, the arrangements need to be changed considering the needs of other patients.

“Now a block of it has been dedicated to treating coronavirus patients,” Jini said.

Dr Jini added that given the surge in COVID-19 cases in the capital complex, TRIHMS authorities have asked the state government to identify a suitable location to establish another dedicated hospital.

“As a result, the state government has reserved the new MLA apartment in Chimpu, near here, which will be converted into a hospital. There will be 20 intensive care beds and 30 to 40 normal beds to keep COVID-19 patients. It will start working in a few days, ”he added.
