Coronavirus live updates: The number of coronavirus cases in India soared to 11 lakh cases on Monday morning after 40,425 new patients were registered in the past 24 hours, the country’s biggest one-day jump in terms of fresh infections, the Union’s health ministry said this morning. In the past 24 hours, 681 deaths from the highly contagious disease have been reported, bringing the death toll from COVID-19 to 27,497. The recovery rate stood at 62.61% this morning. India is the third country most affected by the pandemic after the United States and Brazil.
Maharashtra continues to report the highest number of cases, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat and West Bengal.
Meanwhile, trials of the coronavirus vaccine developed at the University of Oxford will begin in India as soon as a license is obtained, said the Indian company which is partnering with researchers in the UK.
The AZD1222 vaccine had a favorable response in the first phase of clinical trials. It did not cause any serious side effects and caused immune responses of antibodies and T cells, according to the results of tests published in the medical journal The Lancet.
