The number of coronaviruses in India soared to 276,583 this morning with 9,985 new patients registered in the past 24 hours, the number of those who recovered having exceeded active cases of COVID-19 in the country for the first time. To date, 1,35,206 patients have recovered; almost 1.33 lakh are still on treatment for this highly contagious disease. Out of the total number of cases reported since the start of the pandemic, 7,745 patients have died; 279 patients have died in the past 24 hours. The country ranks fifth in the world in terms of COVID-19 cases, after the United States, Brazil, Russia and the United Kingdom. It is the eighth consecutive day that India has recorded more than 9,000 cases in a single day.

There has been no community transmission in Maharashtra, the country’s largest coronavirus hotspot, said State Health Minister Rajesh Tope. The state has 90,000 cases, far ahead of 84,000 cases in China, where the pandemic started in the city of Wuhan in December.
