Kinshasa, DR Congo:

The Democratic Republic of the Congo declared the end of the country’s latest Ebola outbreak on Wednesday, after the outbreak killed 55 people in the past five months.

“I am happy to solemnly declare the end of the 11th epidemic of the Ebola virus in the province of Equateur” in the vast north-west of the country, Minister of Health Eteni Longondo told reporters.

The World Health Organization said the latest outbreak had killed 55 people out of 119 confirmed cases and 11 probable cases since it began in June.

As with the previous outbreak in the east of the country, the wide use of vaccinations has helped curb the disease, the WHO said.

This epidemic, which began in August 2018, was the deadliest in the country with 2,277 deaths.

The latest outbreak of hemorrhagic fever occurred because the previous outbreak was not officially over and the country had taken measures since the end of March to combat the coronavirus.

“There remains a high risk of a resurgence,” the minister said.
