New Delhi:
Congress slammed the BJP government in Karnataka on Wednesday over violence in Bengaluru in which three people were killed after police opened fire to quell a mob that was raging angered by a social media post, and declared that it was a “complete failure of the policing mechanism”.
Dozens of police officers, including around 50 police officers, were injured in the violence that erupted Tuesday evening and continued until the wee hours of Wednesday, apparently sparked by the online post.
The violence, riots and arson attacks in Bengaluru are “reprehensible, condemnable and unacceptable,” Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala said.
“This is a complete failure of the mechanism for maintaining public order and the rule of law. Was the (BS) Yediyurappa government asleep or waiting for the violence to occur?” Mr Surjewala said in a tweet.
“Why did the police not act in time? Who is responsible for 3 deaths?” He asked.
The congressional secretary-general in charge of the organization, KC Venugopal, said the violence in Bengaluru was “unfortunate and reprehensible”.
“Strict action should be taken against those behind the derogatory message and those who rioted,” he said on Twitter.
“Taking the law into their own hands and destroying public property should not be tolerated. Let peace prevail and the law run its course,” Venugopal said.
