The procurement process for the production of smart electronic passports is underway and their introduction will significantly enhance the security of Indian travel documents, Foreign Minister Jaishankar said on Wednesday.
In his address to the Seva Divas passport, Jaishankar also said that the government intends to open a Seva Kendra postal passport in each constituency of Lok Sabha.
“We have so far been able to supply 488 constituencies to Lok Sabha,” he said.
This process has stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but will progress as the lock is released, he said.
Jaishankar said his department is working with Indian Security Press, Nashik and the National Informatics Center for smart electronic passports with advanced security features.
“I am very confident that the introduction of electronic passports will considerably enhance the security of our travel documents. I understand that the procurement process for its production is currently underway and I would stress the need to hasten this as much as possible”, he added. said.
“I emphasize the need to prioritize the manufacturing of electronic passports,” said Jaishankar.
He said the focus must be on how to simplify the rules and processes without compromising the legitimate security concerns that are at the heart of the government’s reforms.
“We have seen a complete transformation of the passport service, especially in the past six years,” he said.
The Seva Divas passport commemorates the promulgation of the Passport Law on June 24, 1967.
