The Supreme Court requested the assistance of Attorney General KK Venugopal in reviewing the comments made against the judges.

New Delhi:

Discussions on television and in the print media about pending cases in court influence judges’ thinking and cause serious damage to the judiciary, Attorney General KK Venugopal said today.

The problem has taken on threatening proportions today, he noted.

“When an application for bail is presented at the hearing, the television transmits the conversations between the accused and someone, which is prejudicial to the accused and intervenes during the bail hearing. out on bail, ”said Mr. Venugopal before a bench of the Supreme Court. “It’s contempt of court.”

Mr Venugopal was speaking today before the bench of Judges AM Khanwilkar, BR Gavai and Krishna Murari, and appeared in his private capacity and not as Attorney General.

The bench examines issues such as the procedure for expressing a grievance against a judge and under what circumstances. It also examines the extent to which a pending case can be discussed in the media.

The Supreme Court had requested Mr. Venugopal’s assistance on these issues.

He addressed them today as part of the review whether the controversial comments by lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan in 2009 against three former chief justices of India amounted to contempt. He had passed the remarks in an interview with the magazine Tehelka.

On August 10, the court refused to accept a “regret” and an explanation from him and said it would consider whether Mr. Bhushan’s statements constituted prima facie contempt. He will now take over the case on November 4.
