Deadlock should not end immediately, Chinese newspaper said (File)

Beijing:

Positive discussions on ongoing border problems on the real line of control (LAC) during talks between the Indian and Chinese military over the weekend have prevented another Doklam-like crisis, the Global Times, a daily tabloid of the Chinese Communist Party. , reported.

Citing suggestions from Chinese experts on the issue of the Indochinese border, the spokesman said on Monday that due to the complexity of the situation, the military deadlock could continue a little longer.

A meeting was held on Saturday between the commander of the Indian corps based in Leh and the Chinese commander in a cordial and positive atmosphere, said a statement published Sunday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA).

The two sides agreed to peacefully resolve the situation in the border areas in accordance with various bilateral agreements and bearing in mind the agreement between the leaders that peace and tranquility in the Indo-Chinese border regions are essential for the overall development of bilateral relations, the MEA told me.

In recent weeks, India and China have maintained communication through diplomatic and military channels established to deal with the situation in areas along the Indo-Chinese border, he added.

As the command level talks did not result in an immediate change in ground positions, India and China decided to continue discussions at the military and diplomatic levels to resolve the current dispute over the LAC in the area from eastern Ladakh.

During the talks, India urged the Chinese to end their military strengthening in the LAC region and return to the situation before the Chinese side begins to deploy its military forces closer to Indian territory.

Qian Feng, a senior researcher at the Taihe Institute and director of the research department of the National Institute of Strategy at Tsinghua University in Beijing, told the Global Times that recent talks have involved senior officers from both armies , indicating that both parties are paying close attention to the situation and do not want to make it worse.

This has shown that China and India remain committed to peacefully resolving border issues, said Qian Feng, noting that the two sides have the strategic wisdom to see through the hidden motive of the United States to intervene and encourage India to confront China at a time when Sino-US relations are deteriorating.

Media reports suggest that the two sides have stepped up their troops in border areas, leading to another impasse which some believe will become a second crisis in Doklam.

This will not be the case, as both parties have gained extensive experience with the Doklam incident in 2017, and since then, all kinds of bilateral mechanisms, including on military, diplomatic and local matters, have been put in place. instead, which eliminated the possibility of a degenerating incident in crisis, experts noted.

That said, the current impasse should not end immediately, as concrete problems still need to be resolved, said Qian Feng.
