Beijing on Saturday announced details of a proposed new national security law for Hong Kong, paving the way for the city’s most profound change in lifestyle since its return to Chinese rule in 1997.

Beijing said the project included a new national security office for Hong Kong to collect intelligence and deal with crimes against national security, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

China says law aims to fight separatist activities, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces, but critics fear it will overwhelm broad freedoms that are seen as essential to Hong Kong’s status as a global financial center.
