Beijing:
China’s foreign ministry summoned the US ambassador on Wednesday to protest Washington’s sanctions against a controversial national security law in Hong Kong, and said it would fight back.
The warning was issued by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Zheng Zeguang to U.S. Ambassador Terry Branstad hours after President Donald Trump removed Hong Kong from preferential trade treatment and authorized sanctions on banks.
“This is a gross interference in the internal affairs of China and seriously violates international law and basic standards of international relations,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.
“In order to safeguard its own legitimate interests, China will respond as necessary to the wrongful acts of the United States, including sanctions against American entities and individuals,” said the statement.
Zheng also told Branstad that the United States had recently taken “bad actions” on the Chinese regions of Xinjiang and Tibet, and on the South China Sea, “further revealing the nature of its hegemony.”
“In this regard, China has taken and will continue to take countermeasures to resolutely safeguard its basic interests. I mean to the United States that any intimidation and injustice they impose on China will be resolutely countered.”
