Beijing:

China on Sunday launched the world‘s largest population counting exercise, conducted once a decade, to document demographic changes in the most populous country.

About seven million enumerators have started a door-to-door survey for the country’s seventh census to report China’s estimated population of 1.37 billion in the last census ten years ago.

Carrying out the census is key to understanding the size, structure and distribution of the population, Ning Jizhe, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission, said during a video conference to promote the national census.

The census collects data including the name, ID number, sex, marital status, education and occupation of Chinese citizens, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

China has conducted a national population census every 10 years since the 1990s. The exercise was intended to provide the size of its aging population.

In March last year, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang told media that China’s population over the age of 60 grew to 420 million and that of children over six to 100 million, exerting great pressure. on nursing services and creches.

After implementing the decades-old one-child policy, China is facing a demographic crisis with a rapidly aging population. China has allowed people to have a second child since 2016.

China currently has 250 million people over the age of 60 and 170 million over the age of 65, Li said at his annual press conference last March.
