Chennai:

Anxious to return home after being stranded here without work due to the COVID-19 lockout, seven workers from Uttar Pradesh boarded a flight for the first time in their lives and arrived in Varanasi on Monday, thanks to the humanitarian gesture of their employer running a packers and firm movers in the city.

In a refreshing experience amid the heartbreaking scenes of fellow migrant workers taking difficult foot and bike trips seen in various parts of the country in recent days, the seven, in the 23 to 37 age group, took the Indigo flight with their boss giving their shipment.

“Our boss took good care of us as if we were family members. He provided us with kitchen items, basic food and other essentials to help us cook our own food during the lock- He even paid us our wages, “Sanjay Kumar, one of the workers, said PTI after landing in Varanasi.

Sandeep Jain, who heads Jain Packers and Movers, a four-year-old start-up, also fired three other workers by train.

“They had worked for my success, so I find nothing wrong with spending money to help them get home in this hour of crisis,” Jain told PTI, adding that his employees had traveled by plane for the first time in their lives.

All seven of the planes were from the Prayagraj district and with others, Mr. Jain provided free rental accommodation and food.

Salaries were paid for two months during the shutdown period and the total cost, including accommodation, food and tickets, amounted to around Rs.4 lakh, he said.

“With the lockout that has kept them completely indoors for over two months and the new coronavirus pandemic television worries them for family members, my workers have expressed a desire to go home,” said M Jain, whose parents with him had migrated to Chennai. from Rajasthan when he was three years old.

Immediately, he agreed and booked airline tickets for 7 of his staff, via Indigo Airlines, on May 22.

He personally saw them at the airport here on Monday.

“Without work here and the coronavirus causing panic, they wanted to go home to find their families. And when the government opened up the aviation industry, I booked the plane tickets for them,” added Mr. Jain.

The workers promised to return once the COVID-19 situation improved.

After reaching Varanasi in the afternoon, they called Mr. Jain and thanked him, he added.
