People celebrate after Democratic candidate Joe Biden wins the 2020 US presidential election.

Washington / New York:

Supporters of Democrat Joe Biden banged pots, honked their cars and started fireworks in American cities after their candidate captured the U.S. presidency in a narrow victory over President Donald Trump.

Minutes after major television networks declared Biden the winner after four difficult days since the Nov. 3 election, people marched to the White House to celebrate outside a security fence as the noise of Burgeoning fireworks were being done in the distance.

In nearby Dupont Circle, several hundred people marched, playing music, singing and dancing, and marching towards the White House to the sound of horns and cowbells.

Loud cheers erupted in the halls of the hotel where Biden’s aides are staying. “Worth every minute,” said a Biden aide. Campaign staff nudged and hugged in the hotel lobby.

In the New York neighborhood of Brooklyn, cars were honking their horns and people pumping their fists and clapping in the streets.

“The nightmare is over,” said Andrew Ravin, 45, while his neighbor Kenneth Henry, 51, said: “We can breathe again.”

Screams, cheers and fireworks echoed through the Democratic stronghold of Atlanta’s East Atlanta Village as the message spread that Biden had been named the winner.

Emmi Braselton, 37, a freelance graphic designer from Atlanta, was accompanying her two-year-old daughter Sylvie, who asked her, “What the hell is mommy?” Braselton said.

“I told her, the good guy won. And also, now there will be a woman as vice president. And she said to me, ‘I want to be president.'”
