Chandigarh:

A drunken man from the Sangrur district in Punjab attacked his wife on Sunday with a sharp weapon in public view in a market, causing her injuries, a police official said.

Distraught with a domestic problem, the defendant identified as Ajaib Singh forcibly took his wife Veerpal Kaur from his home in his cart to the Jakhal Road market in the Sunam neighborhood of the district on Sunday morning, police said.

While under the influence of alcohol, Singh threatened his wife to teach him a lesson. Large numbers of people gathered there when Singh threatened his wife.

Singh also warned them not to approach him, police said.

One from the crowd even hit Singh with a brick, police added.

When he started attacking his wife, the people overpowered him and saved Veerpal. The crowd later beat him badly, police said.

Veerpal and Singh were both admitted to a civilian hospital, but the accused was later transferred to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala.

A case under section 307 (attempted murder) of the Indian Penal Code has been filed against the accused, Sunam Deputy Police Superintendent Mehtab Singh said.

Police said an investigation into the case was underway.
