BJP senior official Uma Bharti today appeared in person before a special tribunal in Lucknow, which is conducting the trial in the 1992 Babri mosque demolition case.
The CBI Special Court is currently recording the statements of 32 accused under the Code of Criminal Procedure or article 313 of the CrPC (power of the court to examine the accused), a stage in the trial following the questioning of witnesses dependent.
The head of the BJP, 61, is the 19th accused to testify in court in the case of more than 27 years.
Thirteen other alleged defendants, including former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani and senior BJP leaders Murli Manohar Joshi and Kalyan Singh have yet to be examined at this stage.
Their lawyers told the CBI court that they preferred to appear by videoconference.
Ayodhya mosque was demolished in December 1992 by “Kar sevaks” who claimed that an ancient temple of Ram had stood on the same site.
The IWC court is conducting day-to-day hearings to complete the trial by August 31, in accordance with instructions from the Supreme Court.
