While initiating debate on the no-confidence motion, Congress veteran Siddaramaiah launched a scathing attack on the BJP government, more specifically on the family of Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

Alleging that the BJP government has lost the confidence of the people to continue in power, Siddaramaiah said the BJP never had a mandate to run the state.

“You lacked enough numbers (in the assembly), but you proposed Operation Lotus.

Mr. Yediyurappa is the father of Operation Lotus (a term used by the opposition to describe initiatives aimed at attracting lawmakers to the BJP) in the country, ”K Siddaramaiah said as he opened the debate on the no-confidence motion. .

Siddaramaiah was referring to the collapse of the Congress-JDS coalition government in July last year, with some congressional and JDS lawmakers resigning from the assembly and later joining the BJP.

Alleging that the government did not provide relief to people affected by the floods in 2019, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the government had requested assistance of around Rs 35,000 crore from the Center when it had only obtained Rs. 1662 crore.

On the law and order front, Siddaramaiah said the government failed because two people were shot dead in Mangaluru during the Anti-Citizenship Amendment Law / National Citizens Register protests.

Alleging the involvement of Mr. Yediyurappa’s family in the corruption, Mr. Siddaramaiah said there were accusations against a Mr. Vijayendra that he took a bribe from a local contractor. Bangalore Development Authority to the tune of several million rupees.

Mr Vijayendra is an apparent reference to Yediyurappa’s son, BY Vijayendra, who is the BJP’s state vice president.

In response to the allegation, Mr. Yediyurappa challenged Mr. Siddaramaiah to prove the charge.

“If there is one iota of truth that my family is involved, then I will withdraw from politics. If it is wrong, you resign. You should be ashamed of making baseless allegations,” Yediyurappa said. .

In the 225-member assembly, the ruling BJP has 116 members, Congress 67, JD (S) 33, BSP and nominee 1, independents 2 and the President (he has a casting vote).

Four seats – Sira, Basavakalyan, RR Nagar and Maski are vacant.
