With only one candidacy for Rajya Sabha’s only seat in Arunachal Pradesh until Tuesday, the latest date to do so, BJP candidate Nabam Rebia seems ready to be elected.

Rebia is the only state candidate to run for the June 19 election of Rajya Sabha, said Chief Electoral Officer D J Bhattacharjee.

He filed his papers Monday after the BJP central electoral committee nominated him the day before.

Rebia will be declared the winner without any election if he does not withdraw his candidacy within the time limit, said Secretary of State Legislative Assembly K Habung, who has been appointed returning officer by the Election Commission. .

The application review will take place on June 10 and June 12 is the last date to withdraw applications, said Bhattacharjee.

The electoral process will be completed on June 22, he said.

Rebia, who represented the state in Rajya Sabha for two consecutive terms from 1996 to 2002 and again from 2002 to 2008 as a candidate for Congress, also served the state as president and cabinet minister.

The Election Commission had published on June 2 a notification for the holding of elections to the sole seat of Rajya Sabha in Arunachal Pradesh with other states.

Mukut Mithi of Congress is the outgoing deputy Rajya Sabha of the northeast state. His term will end on June 23.

The 60-member Arunachal Pradesh Assembly has 41 BJP deputies, followed by seven members from Janata Dal (United. Congress and National Peoples Party (NPP), each with four members, the Peoples Party of Arunachal, one and three independents.The JD-U and the NPP support the government of the BJP led by Pema Khandu in the state.
