Calcutta:

BJP MP Arjun Singh’s nephew Sanjit Singh, aka Pappu, was arrested in connection with a bank fraud case in Barrackpore, in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, police said on Saturday.

He was arrested Friday night after hours of questioning for fraud at a cooperative bank in Barrackpore, a senior police official said.

The accused was presented to a local court in the afternoon, he said.

Barrackpore MP Arjun Singh, who has been at odds with the TMC government in the state, called the arrest a “vendetta policy”.

“His arrest is nothing more than a vendetta policy to slander my family and me. Initially the police tried to trap me in the case. But when they couldn’t prove anything , they set up my nephew. We will fight in court, “Singh said.

Trinamool, however, called the allegations “baseless”.

“The allegations are completely unfounded. If someone has committed a crime, the law will run its course,” TMC chief and minister Firhad Hakim said.
