The Assam CID on Thursday arrested Police Superintendent Kumar Sanjit Krishna, who is the brother of the Chief Secretary of State in connection with the police examination paper leak scam in the state.

Mr Krishna is the most senior serving officer in the Assam government arrested so far in the scam that rocked the state, giving much needed ammunition to the opposition just six months before the poll of the Assembly.

Mr. Krishna is the brother of Chief Secretary Kumar Sanjay Krishna.

A senior official told PTI that Sanjit Krishna was arrested by the CID after completing his medical examination, which was done following a series of marathon interrogations over the past few days.

“He will be brought to court tomorrow and we will seek his custody,” the official said.

Sanjit Krishna, who was suspected of being missing on Wednesday, arrived at the state police headquarters around 11 a.m. and was questioned by senior police officials in Assam throughout the day, said a source at PTI.

At around 6 p.m., he was arrested and CID detectives took him to their headquarters, located about 200 meters away. His medical examination followed.

The senior police official was questioned for long hours on Monday and Tuesday also by senior police officers in Assam.

On September 20, the written exam question paper for 597 unarmed police sub-inspector positions in Assam was leaked and the State Police Recruitment Bureau (SLPRB) canceled the test a few minutes after it started in the state that day.

About 66,000 candidates had downloaded their admission cards to sit the written tests in 154 centers in all districts.

SLPRB chairman Pradeep Kumar later resigned, taking moral responsibility for the scam, and the state government reconstituted the board of directors with the chief police officer as chairman.
