Guwahati:

Nearly 500 people, including former BJP MP Dilip Moran, from various political parties and social groups joined the opposition Congress on Wednesday, while almost an equal number joined the party ahead of the elections. assembly scheduled for next year.

Mr Moran, who was a Doom Dooma BJP lawmaker, joined Congress in the presence of his head of state Ripun Bora in Guwahati.

BJP leader Niranjan Nath has also switched sides for the opposition party.

Bakkkar Ali Ahmed and Ismail Hussain from Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) joined Congress with around 50 party workers.

Petros Basumatary of the Bodoland Popular Front (BPF) also joined the same party.

The AGP and BPF are part of the coalition led by the ruling BJP.

Abdul Khandakar and Shahjahan Ali of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) joined Congress with over 100 supporters. These two leaders unsuccessfully contested the 2016 Assembly ballots.

Apart from them, a number of singers, actors, dancers, music composers and others joined the Congress.

On the other hand, nearly 500 members of Congress pledged allegiance to the BJP in Nagaon in the presence of party deputy Rupak Sarmah.

“Congress workers are frustrated with their party’s alliance with the AIUDF. We have been telling them from the start that if the two opposition parties join hands, the BJP will be the biggest winner,” Mr. Sarmah.

Election to the Assam Assembly, made up of 126 members, is scheduled for April next year.
