Imphal:
On Saturday, a senior Indian police officer in Manipur allegedly shot himself with his service weapon. He was taken to the hospital and is critical.
Arvind Kumar, the officer currently occupies one of the highest police stations in the state – additional director general of police (public order). He reportedly shot himself in his official quarter at the 2nd Manipur Rifles Complex in Imphal on Saturday. He was taken to a private hospital for treatment in the state capital.
Senior state police and government officials, including chief secretary J Suresh Babu, are at the hospital where Mr. Kumar is being treated.
The secretary-general said that Mr. Kumar’s health was serious but that he was responding to treatment and had also spoken to the doctors, the PTI news agency reported.
“He will be sent to Delhi once his condition improves,” added Babu.
The question is why he took the alleged action, he said.
Mr. Kumar, an IPS officer from Bihar in 1993, had long served in the Intelligence Office, headquartered in the national capital. He was sent to serve in Manipur on the deputation.
More details expected.
