Apple Inc. has told staff at its headquarters in Silicon Valley that the first phase of a return to work plan will begin on June 15, but noted that most employees will not be back for at least several months.
Phase 1 will be “very limited” and workers will only be allowed into the office on certain days based on their work, the company, based in Cupertino, California, wrote in a recent note to staff. More details will be shared later this month, he added.
Apple also reiterated in the memo that it limits the number of people allowed in buildings and other work areas simultaneously, by implementing social distancing, taking temperatures, and forcing office workers to pass a daily health exam. He also “strongly encouraged” staff to take Covid-19 on-site or home testing provided by the company before returning.
Masks will be required at all times at Apple offices in Silicon Valley, which include the main campus of Apple Park, the former Infinite Loop headquarters and other locations, the memo said. An Apple spokesperson declined to comment.
Although the phase 1 process doesn’t officially start until next week, some Apple employees have already started to come back, Bloomberg News reported last month. In areas outside of Silicon Valley, the first phase began in May.
Some senior Apple executives, as well as hardware and software engineers, have spent time in the office as the company prepares for a series of new product launches in the second half of 2020. A small portion of the staff is stayed throughout the Covid -19 lockout period.
Apple is moving faster than some other tech companies that focus more on software than on hardware. Google of Alphabet Inc. is slowly reopening more offices from July 6. Twitter Inc., based in San Francisco, said employees could work away from the office forever, while Facebook Inc. expects 50% of its workforce to be away in 10 years.
