Interior Minister Amit Shah discussed the COVID-19 situation in the country on Wednesday with Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and officials from their ministries, officials said. It was a routine meeting, said an Interior Ministry official.

Besides Harsh Vardhan, others at the meeting included senior officials from the health and interior ministries, the official said.

More than 6 lakh people have been infected with a coronavirus and at least 17,400 have died across the country.

India recorded the highest COVID-19 deaths on Wednesday with more than 500 deaths, Maharashtra, Delhi and Tamil Nadu accounting for more than 70% of deaths, while more than 18,000 new infections were reported, according to Ministry of Health data.

This is the fifth consecutive day that coronavirus infections have increased by more than 18,000. The country has experienced an increase of more than 3.94 lakh infections from June 1 to date.

The number of active cases is 2,20,114, while 3,47,978 people have recovered and one patient has migrated, according to data updated at 8 a.m.

“So about 59.43% of patients have recovered so far,” said an official.
