The United Nations:
India received overwhelming support when elected to the United Nations Security Council and will continue to provide leadership and new direction for a reformed multilateral system, said Permanent Representative of India to Ambassador United Nations TS Tirumurti.
India collected 184 votes from the 192 ballots tabled in the General Assembly to win the election of the non-permanent seat of the powerful Security Council.
India’s two-year term will begin on January 1, 2021. It is the eighth time that India has sat at the high table of the United Nations, which includes five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members.
“I am truly delighted that India has been elected a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2021-2022. We have received overwhelming support and I am deeply touched by the immense confidence that United Nations member states have settled in India, “said Tirumurti in a video message after the election results were announced.
Previously, India had been elected a non-permanent member of the Council for the years 1950-1951, 1967-1968, 1972-1973, 1977-1978, 1984-1985, 1991-1992 and more recently in 2011-2012.
TS Tirumurti said India’s election to the Security Council is a “testament” to the “vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his inspiring world leadership, especially in the days of COVID-19″.
“India will become a member of the Security Council at a critical time and we are confident that in COVID and the post-COVID world, India will continue to be a driving force and to guide a reformed multilateral system,” said M Tirumurti.
Along with India, Ireland, Mexico and Norway also won the Security Council elections held on Wednesday. There were 192 member states present and voting and the required 2/3 majority was 128. Canada lost the election.
“Member states elect India to the non-permanent seat of the Security Council for the period 2021-2022 with overwhelming support. India obtains 184 of the 192 valid votes polled,” tweeted India’s permanent mission to the UN.
India will sit in the most powerful United Nations body for two years from January 1, alongside the five permanent members of China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and United States as well as non-permanent members from Estonia, Niger, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia and Vietnam.
The two-year terms of Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Indonesia and South Africa expire this year.
