The Center informed the High Court that all e-commerce sites must mention the country of origin for imports

New Delhi:

Ecommerce sites like Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal must ensure that the country of origin is displayed on imported products sold on their platforms, the Center told the Delhi High Court today.

The submission was made in an affidavit filed before a bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Judge Prateek Jalan by the central government which stated that according to the legal metrology law and rules, e-commerce sites must ensure that the country of origin is displayed on the “digital and electronic network used for e-commerce transactions”.

The affidavit, filed through the permanent council of the central government, Ajay Digpaul, also stated that enforcement of the rules was the responsibility of states and Union territories.

Mr Digpaul said that whenever a violation is found, action is taken by the legal metrology officials in the relevant state or Union territory in accordance with the law.

“The necessary advice / guidance to all e-commerce entities with a copy to the All State / UT Legal Melrology Controller has been issued to ensure compliance with the provisions of the law and rules,” the affidavit states.

The affidavit was filed in response to a PIL requesting instructions from the Center to ensure that the name of the country of manufacture is displayed on products sold on e-commerce sites.
