Aurangabad:

Union Minister Raosaheb Danve said on Saturday that Punjab’s chief minister Amarinder Singh, whose party is protesting against new agricultural sector laws, was on a committee that studied draft legislation.

Mr. Singh’s government was in favor of the bills, he said. The Congress, which reigns in Punjab, opposes the new laws.

Mr Danve, Union minister of state for consumer and food and public distribution, said the three bills were introduced after extensive consultations with all stakeholders, and said said they were opposed for “political purposes”.

“These bills were not presented by the BJP alone. A committee of chief ministers, including CM Amarinder Singh of the Punjab, deliberated on them.

“The opposition parties had had their say on the bills,” M. said, speaking to reporters.

He said the government of Punjab was in favor of invoices because farmers paid 8.5 percent tax there when they sold their produce.

Agricultural Trade and Trade (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill 2020, Farmers’ Agreement (Empowerment and Protection) Bill 2020 on Price Assurance and Agricultural Services and Essential Goods (Amendment) Bill 2020 became law after obtaining presidential approval earlier this week.
