No less than 180 migrant workers were brought by boat to Silchar, Assam from Mumbai on Tuesday in a charter flight operated by AirAsia India with the support of actor Sonu Sood, said the low-cost carrier.

Anup Manjeshwar, sales and distribution manager, AirAsia India, said it was a pleasure to work with Sonu Sood on this initiative, which had inspired many others to support these efforts.

“This is our 12th flight under the banner” Umeed Ki Udaan “, with 180 migrant guests from Mumbai to Silchar, Assam,” he added.

‘Umeed ki Udaan’ was launched by AirAsia India to help migrant workers reach their homes during the coronavirus-induced lockout.

India resumed scheduled domestic passenger flights on May 25 after an interval of two months. Regular international passenger flights remain suspended.

So far, more than 2.66 lakh people have been infected and almost 7,500 people have died from the new coronavirus in India.
