New Delhi:

Air India introduced a “shorter workweek program” on Friday under which its permanent employees, with the exception of pilots and cabin crew, can choose to work three days a week with wages of 60% said senior airline officials.

This measure was introduced to improve the airline’s cash flow in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, they added.

“The permanent employee who chooses such a program can benefit from it for a period of one year,” said the officials.

The pandemic has had a significant impact on the aviation industry, and all airlines in India have taken measures such as cutting employee wages, laying off employees to improve their cash flow.

Officials said employees opting for the “shorter workweek” would not be able to work in other jobs on other days of the week.

After an interval of two months due to the closure caused by the coronavirus, India resumed its domestic passenger flights from May 25, but on an abbreviated basis. International passenger flights remain suspended in the country.

After failing to divest from Air India two years ago, the central government restarted the process in January of this year. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the process has slowed down.

Air India is a loss-making company and has a debt of more than Rs 60,000 crore.
