Beijing:
Two experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) have arrived in China to investigate the source of the new coronavirus, spokesman for the country’s foreign ministry Hua Chunying confirmed on Monday.
According to CGTN media reports, Hua, at the daily press conference, allegedly said the two experts would cooperate with Chinese scientists and medical experts and discuss related matters, but did not provide details of the route experts in China.
Hua said the experts could also make a similar trip to other countries and regions.
“WHO also believes that finding the source of the virus is an ongoing and developing process, which may involve several countries and regions. WHO will carry out similar inspections in other countries and regions as necessary,” said Hua told reporters.
“Knowing the source of the virus is very, very important,” said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus last month.
“It’s science, it’s public health, we can fight the virus better when we know everything about the virus, including how it started,” he said.
Scientists have speculated that the virus has passed from animals to humans, possibly in a market in Wuhan, after the outbreak of the epidemic in China in December 2019.
