The color of Lonar Lake in Maharashtra which turns pink has not only surprised the locals, but also the scientists

Nagpur:

A team of scientists from the National Research Institute for Environmental Engineering (NEERI), based in Nagpur, will visit Lake Lonar in Buldhana district of Maharashtra next week and collect its water samples to analyze why it became rose, said an official.

The oval-shaped Lonar Lake, formed after a meteorite hit Earth about 50,000 years ago, is a popular tourist center and also attracts scientists from around the world. The average diameter of the lake is around 1.2 km.

The color of the lake’s water recently turned pink, which not only surprised the locals, but also nature lovers and scientists.

Some experts have attributed it to the salinity and the presence of algae in the water. They said it was not the first time that the color change had occurred, although it was more evident this time.

Contacted, Buldhana collector Suman Chandra said: “Lonar Lake is under the jurisdiction of the Forest Department because it has been declared a sanctuary. The department has sent water samples to NEERI. However, the institute will send a team of scientists on June 15 to take samples for analysis. “

“They will analyze the water to find out the exact reason for the color change,” she said.

The Lonar crater lake was identified as a unique geographic site by a British officer named CJE Alexander in 1823.
