New Delhi:

Following Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s call for all states to put politics aside and unite to tackle the pollution problem in Delhi, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said said today that he had said the same to the Chief Minister.

“I used to tell him (Arvind Kejriwal) the same thing,” Mr Javadekar said, when asked to comment on Mr Kejriwal’s remarks.

The Minister of the Environment said that pollution was a real problem and that a suitable solution had to be found to reduce it.

He said the central government has taken several steps with the help of five states in the northern region that have paid off.

Mr Javadekar admitted that for a few days Delhi faces the serious pollution problem due to various reasons including stubble burning in neighboring states of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

On Monday, Mr. Kejriwal called on Mr. Javadekar to hold monthly meetings with the chief ministers of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and UP to reduce air pollution, saying there had a lack of political will to address the stubble burning problem.

During a virtual press briefing, he said the affected states had not been able to find a solution to stop the stubble burning and prevent air pollution. “I believe that pollution from stubble burning can be brought under control in a short period of time. But a lack of political will is visible in this regard.”
