“A gentle soul and abundant talent,” wrote Amitabh Bachchan in a moving post for the famous Bengal actor Soumitra Chatterjee on Sunday. Soumitra Chatterjee, 85, died Sunday afternoon in Kolkata. Paying tribute to the iconic actor of Bengali cinema, Amitabh Bachchan shared a photo of himself and the deceased actor and described him as “one of the most powerful pillars of the film industry”. He tweeted: “Soumitra Chatterjee … an iconic legend … one of the most powerful pillars in the film industry, has fallen … a gentle soul and abundant talent … met him for last time at IFFI in Kolkata … prayers. ” In his blog, Big B wrote: “Soumitra Chatterjee .. a giant and a prolific icon .. a legend of the Bengal film industry .. dies .. just prayers for the dead soul and helplessness … the last met at IFFI in Kolkata …. a gentle, humble and gracious human being. “

The last rites of Soumitra Chatterjee were celebrated on Sunday at Keoratala crematorium in Kolkata evening with the honors of the police. The funeral was attended by the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, as well as several celebrities of Bengali cinema and hundreds of fans.
The thespian was admitted to the Belle Vue clinic on October 6 with COVID-19. He recovered from the virus within days, but his condition worsened over the days. Shortly after testing negative for the virus, he was put on life support and on Saturday he stopped responding to any of the treatments. “Soumitra Chatterjee does not respond to treatment. Even miracles can fail in this situation,” said a doctor who treated him at the Belle Vue clinic in Kolkata on Saturday.
After Soumitra Chatterjee’s death, an official statement was issued which read: “We declare with heavy hearts that Shri Soumitra Chattopadhyay breathed his last breath at 12:15 pm at the Belle Vue clinic today (November 15, 2020). homage to his soul. “
Soumitra Chatterjee was best known for playing the roles of Apu in Apur Sansar and Feluda in Sonar Kella and Joy Baba Felunath, all three made by Satyajit Ray. He has collaborated with Satyajit Ray for 14 times. Some of their films are Charulata, Devi, Teen Kanya, Ghare Baire, and Ganashatru.
