61,537 coronavirus cases in India in one day, 20.88 cases in total Lakh

India has so far reported more than 42,000 coronavirus-related deaths.

New Delhi:
A huge spike of 61,537 new coronavirus patients in the past 24 hours brought India’s total to 20.88,611, the Union Health Ministry said this morning, adding that more than 14.27 lakh patients have recovered so far. It is the fourth day in a row that India has recorded the highest number of fresh infections in a single day across the world, according to data from the World Health Organization. More than 42,000 deaths linked to this highly infectious disease have been recorded by India since the start of the pandemic; 933 patients have died in the past 24 hours.

Here are the top 10 developments on coronavirus cases in India:

  1. While India yesterday reported its largest increase in one-day cases with 62,538 fresh infections, 56,282 patients were registered on Thursday. As of Wednesday, 52,509 new infections were recorded and that figure rose to 52,050 on Tuesday. The United States and Brazil – two countries with higher Covid cases than India – saw fewer new infections in the four days.

  2. This is the second day in a row that India has reported more than 60,000 cases. The country has reported more than 50,000 fresh infections every day for more than a week.

  3. The ten states with the highest number of lakh cases in India are: Maharashtra (4.9 lakh cases), Tamil Nadu (2.85 lakh cases), Andhra Pradesh (2.06 lakh cases), Karnataka ( 1.64 lakh cases, Delhi (1.42 lakh cases), Uttar Pradesh (1.13 lakh cases), West Bengal (89.66 thousand cases), Telangana (77,513 cases), Bihar ( 71,304 cases) and Gujarat (68,000 cases).

  4. In the past 24 hours, the highest number of cases were reported in five states – Maharashtra (10,483), Andhra Pradesh (10,171), Karnataka (6,670), Tamil Nadu (5,880) and Uttar Pradesh (4 404).

  5. These five states also recorded the highest number of COVID-19-related deaths during this period, according to government data.

  6. The recovery rate stood at 68.32% this morning, an improvement from 67.98% yesterday.

  7. The positivity rate – an indicator to assess the prevalence of the disease – 10.28 versus 10.88 percent yesterday.

  8. India, which has a population of around 138 crore, has tested more than 2.33 crore of samples so far. On Friday, 5.98 lakh samples were tested across the country.

  9. Worldwide, the Covid tally has soared to 1.93 crore; more than 7.21 lakh people died.

  10. The pandemic epicenter in the United States has more than 49 lakh cases. Brazil in the second sport has more than 29 lakh cases.
