Betul:
Five workers and a truck driver were killed after their vehicle loaded with iron bars fell from the Tava River bridge in Betul district of Madhya Pradesh, police said on Tuesday.
The accident took place overnight Monday and Tuesday, an official said.
The truck crashed against the railings of the bridge and then fell into the bed of the Tava River, trapping five workers under it, the official said.
The driver of the truck also died in the crash, said Chopna police station official Rahul Raghuwanshi.
Police say the truck driver likely lost control of the wheels, causing the vehicle to crash into the bridge railings.
A crane was commissioned to remove bodies trapped under the truck.
The six people were identified as Rikesh (25), Bablu Bhalavi (24), Dilip Uikey (26), Sanju Batke (40), Munna Salam (24) and driver Manohar Sahu (38), the official said.
The six workers were from the village of Pipri in the district, he said.
The bodies were sent for autopsy to the government hospital in Ghodadongri, he said, adding that a case had been recorded.
