Srinagar:

Three Indian Army soldiers have been killed and five others injured in separate incidents in massive shelling by Pakistan along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. The military said an appropriate response was being given to Pakistan, which is using mortars to target Indian positions.

A defense spokesperson said two soldiers were killed and four others wounded when the Pakistani army started firing mortars in the Nowgam area of Kupwara district in North Kashmir. The injured are being evacuated, the spokesperson said.

It is not clear whether the Pakistani military suffered any casualties.

Previously, one soldier was killed in the Poonch sector and another was wounded after the Pakistani army violated the ceasefire and started heavy fire on Indian positions.

Over the past eight months, more than 3,000 ceasefire violations by Pakistan have been reported, the highest in the past 17 years.

In 2003, India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire along the Line of Control.
