Calcutta:
West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar met with Union Home Secretary Amit Shah in Delhi on Thursday and then did something rarely done. He called a press meeting and launched an attack on Mamata Banerjee’s government, listing the complaints frequently voiced. He expressed concern about the holding of free, fair and fearless elections in the state which are expected in about six months.
Mr Dhankar claimed that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee runs a police state, that sections of the bureaucracy act as political workers and infantry, and that political violence is a daily affair.
“Relentless political vendetta of unimaginable dimensions with brutal targeted assassinations,” he said.
But those complaints Mr. Dhankar voiced earlier, through tweets and at press meetings in Kolkata. On Thursday, for the first time, he raised the issue of elections.
“People deserve democracy. I am committed to guaranteeing a free, fair and fearless vote. This is the minimum expectation of the people,” he said.
“You rule only through a police apparatus and that is not allowed. A police station will not be allowed to be a campaign office. This is the minimum I can do to justify the oath I have. on loan as governor, ”Dhankar said.
“I am not part of politics. It is not my concern that is elected. I am concerned with the way elections are conducted. I am concerned with the way governance takes place. If governance does not ‘is not in accordance with the rule of law, so the governor is worried, ”he added.
Trinamool Congress dismissed the governor’s explosion in Delhi as bogus, mischievous and politically motivated.
“He complains that the police are politicized. What about him? He says he is worried about Bengal. We are worried about him. He is reducing his own office,” said Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee.
TMC MP Sougata Roy tweeted: “The governor’s explosion is the explosion of a frustrated man. He is trying to win the favor of the ruling Center party so that after his term as governor ends, he gets a political position. “.
Another Trinamool MP, Kalyan Banerjee, called “the speaker of the BJP”.
Even Trinamool’s rivals Congress and the left condemned the governor for voicing his grievances at a press meeting after meeting with the Home Secretary. “He may be right in his complaints. But he cannot say such things publicly. It is our role,” said Pradip Bhattacharya, congressman.
Sujan Chakraborty, MP for CPM, said: “There is no law and order in the state, it should not be denied that the CM runs the state through the police and the IPAC. must be laxman rekhas (limits) for the governor. He cannot hold press conferences and abuse the state just for publicity and political reasons. “
The BJP defended the governor’s comments. “He didn’t say anything bad. Law and order has collapsed in the state, political violence continues, the police are controlling everything. That’s exactly what he said,” Sayantan Bose said, head of the BJP.
Mamata Banerjee did not react at all to the governor’s explosion. She posted two tweets today. One was to tolerate the death of Vice President Sukumar Hansda. The other was to announce that the Kolkata International Film Festival was postponed from November to January.
