Seoul, South Korea:
Woman who ran shelter for South Korean victims of wartime sexual slavery in Japan has been found dead at her home, police said on Sunday amid a full-blown corruption scandal investigation owners.
Prosecutors investigate allegations that activists at the Korean Council for Justice and Remembrance embezzled funds for the so-called “comfort women” – an understatement for Japan’s former wartime sex slaves .
The 60-year-old woman is said to have died, police said.
“She came back alone and the door was locked,” the police told AFP without giving the woman’s name.
The police said they did not think anyone else was involved in his death.
The reason for her death was not known, but the South Korean news agency Yonhap said she had previously said that she was going through a difficult time after prosecutors raided the shelter.
The plight of comfort women has been a thorny issue between Seoul and Tokyo for decades, and the militant group has campaigned for compensation from Japan.
But last month, Lee Yong-soo, a prominent victim, accused the group and its former leader of exploiting comfort women to raise government funds and public donations.
Lee said little money was spent on their case, prompting prosecutors to investigate.
The investigation includes allegations that the former leader, Yoon Mee-hyang, embezzled funds to buy apartments and pay for her daughter’s school fees in the United States.
Yoon – who left the group after winning a parliamentary seat in April – denied all the allegations but apologized for “banking errors”.
