Jalna:

Police arrested two in-laws of a woman accused of killing her and her partner, who were run over under a tractor in Jalna district, Maharashtra, allegedly because of an “illicit relationship” an official said on Friday.

The accused, Bathwell Sampat Lalzare and his son Vikas Lalzare, residents of the village of Chapalgaon under Ghansawangi tehsil, were arrested on Thursday, Ambad Aniruddha Nandedkar police inspector said.

Bathwell Lalzare is the father-in-law of widowed wife Mariya, while Vikas Lalzare is his brother-in-law, he said.

Police said Mariya Lalzare’s husband, 32, had died 10 years ago and was living with his in-laws.

She was in a relationship with a married man, Harbak Bhagwat (27), a resident of the same village, they said.

His in-laws objected to their relationship and threatened Mr. Bhagwat with dire consequences when they found out about it, police said.

Mr. Bhagwat had filed a complaint with Ambad Police Station and the district SP against the father-son duo, and also claimed that there was a threat to his life from them, they said.

By March 30, Bhagwat and Mariya had fled and reached Gujarat, after which a disappearance complaint was filed with the police by his family, they said.

On April 22, the police brought them back from Gujarat and since then they have been living together in the village, they said.

On October 28, the two were riding their motorcycles to a nearby village to attend a program when the accused Vikas Lalzare allegedly hit their motorcycle with the tractor and crushed them under the wheels, police said.

The injured couple were rushed to hospital but died of injuries along the way, police said.

Mr Bhagwat’s wife accused Vikas Lalzare and his father of killing her husband and Mariya, they said.

“We have registered a case against Vikas and his father under section 302 of the IPC (murder). Further investigation is underway,” Inspector Nandedkar said.
